Game Changer: How Building Trust and Loyalty Can Deliver Unprecedented Results

James Kane
Speaker, Author, Researcher

Teaming is a key component to a successful design-build project. Building trust and loyalty leads to highly successful teams which in turn leads to successful projects. In this fascinating and highly entertaining presentation, James Kane takes his audiences on a journey into the human brain and explains the secret to building and maintaining real loyal relationships. Supported by more than 40 years of Harvard University research, James will make the case that human beings have a fundamental need to be loyal and actively seek out the specific clues from others that tell them when they can and should be. When an organization, as well as an individual, is able to understand and demonstrate those loyalty-building behaviors, they can develop relationships that will las a lifetime and result in unwavering and unlimited support.

Learning objectives

  • Discover the drivers responsible for loyal relationships
  • Learn why everything we think about trust is wrong.
  • Understand the keys to managing the expectations of others
  • Learn the tangible benefits of building truly loyal relationships. Beyond retention, loyalty offers additional opportunities, advocacy, forgiveness for mistakes, and "fellowship" - the ability to lead change and be viewed as the primary and respected authority of an issue, industry or cause

Our Design-Build Marriage: It's All About Trust

Joana Berling, AIA, DBIA, Peak Design Company
Ben Berling, DBIA, Primus Builders

About the Speakers

Entering into a design-build project can be like entering into a marriage. All team members – contractors, designers, Owners – have the same goal of delivering a successful project. The partnership usually starts out with optimism and even excitement, but along the way there may be bumps in the road. How these challenges are handled can mean a long-term successful relationship or sadly lead to divorce. In this session, a married couple will discuss how they have navigated the collaboration process.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain insight into how a design-build partnership is like a marriage.
  • Learn about strategies to navigate conflicts and improve communication.
  • How contracts can strengthen the relationship and mitigate risk.
  • What is the role the Owner plays on the team?

Building Trust Through Contracting

Joana Berling, AIA, DBIA, Peak Design Group
Scott Churilla, JD, FDBIA, HDR
Robert Gilbert, DBIA, The Collage Companies
Lawrence Levis, AIA, Haskell

Moderator: Brian Walsh, FDBIA, The Collage Companies

Trust is built prior to entering into a design-build contract and is either strengthened or weakened by the time it is signed. Contracts used on design-build projects should be fair, balanced, and clear. They should promote the collaborative aspects inherent in the design-build process. In addition to the contract with the Owner, the principles must also be incorporated into teaming agreements and into agreements with those subconsultants, subcontractors and major suppliers working within the design-build team. This session will discuss DBIA best practices and techniques for creating good contract terms. By putting in the work up front, you can avoid or mitigate issues that arise one you have your NTP.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn about DBIA best practices for design-build contracting
  • Gain an understanding of the essential elements of the design-build contract
  • Gain insight into the role Owners play in this process.
  • Learn how building trust starts with the proposal phase

TJ Lallathin, PE, DBIA, DRMP
Moderator:  David Nardon, DBIA, Superior Construction

About the speakers

Phased Design-Build (PDB) is an evolution of traditional design-build. PDB uses a qualifications-based or best value selection, followed by a process whereby the owner then progresses towards a design and contract price with one team. Its use is relatively new to the transportation sector. During this session, panelists will discuss when and where to use PDB and the benefits on using this delivery method on certain projects.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn about Phased Design-Build and how it differs from traditional design-build
  • Learn about the benefits of Phased Design-Build in Transportation
  • Gain insight into Florida legislation as it relates to Phased Design-Build in the transportation sector
  • Gain insight into the types of projects that might benefit from Phased Design-Build
